Songs For \\ April

Tuesday, 2 May 2017

April was filled with so many new releases, some didn't make the cut but others I haven't stopped listening to, here are the songs I've had stuck in my ears all month:

April kicked off with a very stressed out Ciara writing her dissertation. One night at around 2am I decided to delve into an NME magazine for a break and found the new tracks section and found a description of MAY's Ballerino. I needed something chilled so I popped it on and began writing, queue 30 seconds later and I am a sobbing, goosebumpy mess because this song is just so beautiful. The tone to MAY's voice is just so unusual and ghostly and the melody of the song is haunting and sad, I just can't. This song is perfect to listen to at 2am when you are having a crisis, but prepare to cry.

Jordan Mackampa has released a new song, Jordan is a wonderful human bean and he deserves all the acknowledgement he is getting, also this song is so catchy and I'm so excited for the album and to see him sing it live.

Harry-beautiful-face-and-hair-Styles is back and I'm not ashamed to say I took on my fan girl persona and woke up especially early to listen to him on the breakfast show this month, sorry not sorry. As for the song I love it, I've heard a lot of criticism but personally I think it's really cool and anthemic with huge Bowie vibes (please don't kill me for saying that). It's got a kind of old school rock anthem feel but also with a little bit of an 80's indie twist, very interesting and not what I expected but I haven't had it out of my head all month. Another album I am very excited for.

One of my favourite adorable Youtubers Conan Gray released his latest single on Spotify this month and I lapped that shit up. I love Conan and his aesthetic and I love how his music reflects his aesthetic as well, ultimate aesthetic goals honestly! The lyrics are so clever and I can really relate to them growing up in a small town, it has early Troye Sivan vibes all over it but it also stands on its own as well in uniqueness. I love Conan and wish him all the best for the future and I think this song is just a little sneak peak of what his music career (if he chooses to have one) could be like. The music video is awsome as well!

I heard this cover on an advert for something and it made my ears prick up. I like Hannah Grace's vocal style and how she has brought this song back to it's Gospely' routes and not just a dance number. Although she'll never beat that music video!

Kendrick's back! And I listened to this album in the bath; probably the wrong place to listen to it. I was discussing this album with a friend and he said that he has to be in the right mood and I think he's totally right, it's a very angry album because the issues surrounding it are provoking. It's very clever and the lyricism is almost poetic but it kind of washed over me as this similar sounding piece of writing in a way, not separate songs which is a shame. This song however did stand out and I found myself listening to it more than once unlike the album, sorry Kendrick.

Will Joseph Cook, my new true love. My friend's been obsessed with this album and I decided to give it a listen and found that every song just made me stop what I was doing and listen intently. It takes on the famous juxtaposition of sad lyrics and upbeat rhythms and it just works! I know this is going to be my go to summer album of 2017 and I was kind of trying to keep from listening to it so it would remind me of summer and not the sheer amount of work I have to get through and Carlisle. But I just can't help listening to it at least once a day. Habit is my favourite track, it's so clever and catchy. I would love to have the same way with words as this guy does!

13 year old Ciara was very excited last week when Paramore's new single came out and I think she has been controlling my brain every since. I bloody love this song, it's so different and crazy catchy. I love the lyrics, I love the style I just love this band and I'm so happy they're back. Hayley will always be one of my biggest influences, she's fucking amazing!

The Big Moon's album came out last week and I absolutely love it, it's as badass' as their first single and maybe a little bit more. Formidable is my favourite track because it just makes me feel like I can do anything, I think this album really accentuates girl power and solidarity to another level and they sound like they belong in the early 80's but in a good way! I need to see them live, I need to be in the same room as those lyrics!

So hopefully May will be filled with new tracks from these new albums, I've got so many album releases memorised so I can just consume them all! I love months like this when there's so much new music you feel like you don't have time to listen to it all before the month has ended, I just love music can you tell? What have you been listening to this April?

  2. Ooh I love the new Paramore songs and sound as well, it's quite different from their old stuff and took me a few listens to get into it, but now I can't get Hard Times out of my head!

I haven't heard of The Big Moon but they definitely sound like my kind of band! I'm gonna give them a listen!

    1. Yeah, I think they've definitely changed but you can still tell it's them and I think that's because of Hayley's voice. I like it when bands develop and grow a long with their audience. And they're so great you'll love them!
